Water Storage Project
Removing risk posed by overhead water storage
In 1999, the Monastery’s water tank was relocated to a new site outside of the Monastery’s walls, removing the risk of flooding. For many years, the Monastery’s water storage tank had been resting upon the roof of the South Wing, directly above the library.
In an area where earthquakes are common, this had posed an extraordinary threat to the historic manuscripts and printed books.
