After centuries of use, the manuscripts of Saint Catherine’s are fragile and vulnerable to damage. A large part of the collection is at risk, including the early parchment manuscripts, the manuscripts in Byzantine or Greek-style bindings and certain manuscripts in high-quality Islamic bindings. Two-thirds of the manuscripts need special protection – 2,187 in all.
The Saint Catherine Foundation has funded the development of stainless-steel conservation boxes designed specifically for the Sinai library. Individually adapted to each manuscript, the boxes are expensive: one box costs 1,000 euros (£850).
